A poem for my Daughter

Take my hand and hold it tight
I will walk with you as we pass through the night

Don't be afraid. I am near
Ignore the beasts as they growl, snarl and jeer

The doubts, the self-recrimination the pressing weight
the coalescing of all others hate

Into the maelstrom our souls venture
the world sets out to blame and to censure

I cannot shield you from all that comes your way
but I will not let go of your hand. I will not sway

So little girl as we pass through the night
as I watch you stagger and scream, rage and fight

I will talk, reassure, comment and praise
I will be steadfast as you pass through the blaze

I will shed many tears as I watch you progress
I know how hard it is to wade through this mess

I cannot stop you from stumbles and falls
I will always be there to pick you up when you call

My little girl
My Princess
My light
I will always be with you to fight the good fight.
